Abstract

The development of urban areas in Samarinda City has experienced significant growth in economic, commercial, and service activities, resulting in an increasing demand for more efficient and integrated urban spaces. This development requires a design approach that can optimize land utilization while creating interconnected functions within a building. One of the approaches that can be applied is the Mixed-Use Development concept, which combines several functions within a single building or area to improve spatial efficiency, accessibility, and user activities. The design of Mahakam City Hotel in Samarinda City aims to provide an integrated commercial building that combines hotel facilities, shopping areas, retail spaces, restaurants, meeting rooms, and recreational facilities within a vertical building. This design applies the Mixed-Use Building concept supported by Green Building principles and Tropical Architecture approaches as responses to the climatic conditions and environmental characteristics of Samarinda City. The design method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method through several stages, including primary and secondary data collection, literature studies, precedent studies, site analysis, user analysis, space requirement analysis, and design concept development. The results of the analysis are implemented through vertical zoning arrangements, where public functions such as hotel lobby, retail areas, and commercial facilities are placed on the lower floors; semi-public functions such as ballroom and meeting rooms are located on the middle floors; while private functions such as hotel rooms are positioned on the upper floors. Furthermore, green building strategies are applied through natural lighting optimization, cross ventilation, vegetation integration, water management systems, and climate-responsive façade design. The design outcome shows that the implementation of the Mixed-Use concept in Mahakam City Hotel can create an efficient, adaptive, and multifunctional building that supports urban development in Samarinda City. The integration of green building principles and tropical architectural strategies provides a sustainable design solution while considering user comfort, energy efficiency, and the local environmental characteristics of Samarinda.
